Test Principle

45 Degree Flammability Tester is designed as a whole box type and consists mainly of a control system and a combustion chamber. Install the specimen on the specimen rack with an angle of 45° in the combustion chamber, then let the nozzle close to the sample and ignites the specimen with the flame for a specified time and then returns. Evaluate the flammability scale of the sample by observing the combustion and flame propagation rate on the sample. This instrument is suitable for the ASTM flammability test and FTMS flammability test of clothing fabric, decorative fabric, tent fabric, etc.

Sample Preparation

1 Dry cleaning: refer to the 45-degree dry cleaner instruction or ASTM dry clean method.

2 Washing: Gently knead the dry cleaned samples in soft water for 5 minutes, then dry the samples after rinsing two times in 80℉ water. After the cleaning procedure, the samples dimension is 50.8mm*152.4mm (2×6in).

3 Sample cleaning and dry: with a protruding surface, the sample should be brushed in the opposite direction of villus both in original condition and after cleaning. If without villus, no need to brush. Every sample is fastened on the clamp, put it into the oven with the temperature of 221℉ (105℃) and load on a level to dry, after 30 minutes put it in the cabinet with anhydrous calcium chloride to cool.

Flammability Test Procedure

1 Install the sample on sample frame with a clamp, keep 8mm distance between the fire nozzle and the sample surface.

2 Set ignition time and flame spread time, press the ENT button to save the setting when the set finished.

3 Hang the stop moving hammer on the wing with a cotton rope through leading pole.

4 Light the burner and adjust the frame length to 16mm by using the flame gauge.

5 Start the instrument, flame contact the sample, and the timer automatically starts timing. The burner will leave the sample and burning time start to record after frame contacts with the sample for 1 second. As the stop moving rope is burnt into broken, timer stop timing automatically and record the burning time.

6 Test 5 samples to get the average of burning time. If the burning time is less than 4 second or the samples without burning, need to test 5 samples again. The result is the average of the 10 samples.

Maintenance

1 The fire nozzle shouldn’t be impacted or bended at strong strength, avoid manages affecting the test result.

2 When using the weight hammer stopping switch, the weight need not hang too high, to protect the stop switch.

3 Note cleaning the burning material remaining, the burning track of the sample clamp and the cabinet inside.

4 Should usually check the airtight gas path, because the leakage not only affects the test result but also cause accident hidden danger.

5 The instrument is made of steel, easily rusts in moisture. So you should keep dry condition, and carry on anti-rust treatment regularly.

6 The instrument should be put in the ventilated cabinet to test.
